Heritage and Craftsmanship:
The art of creating this exquisite 'Daqi' or Chinese lacquer bracelet is recognized as an intangible cultural heritage. Since ancient times, natural lacquer derived from the Sumac tree has been valued not only for its beauty but also for its medicinal properties. This "pure natural" resin is harvested by carefully cutting the tree’s bark to collect a white, viscous emulsion, which hardens into a resilient coating. The harvesting process is incredibly intricate — artisans must cut the bark precisely in the middle of the night, switching clam shells every few seconds to preserve the lacquer’s purity. Remarkably, a single lacquer tree yields only about 10 kg of raw lacquer in its lifetime, and it takes resin from 3000 trees to produce just 1 kg of finished lacquer.
Creation Process
Creation Process
YIEON's Daqi Lacquered Collection needs 6 steps to bring natural lacquer to the jewelry collection. Crafting each bracelet is a labor-intensive process requiring extraordinary skill and patience. Every bead undergoes ten to twenty cycles of meticulous hand-coating: applying layers of lacquer, allowing each layer to dry, then carving, sanding, and polishing before repeating the process. This intricate layering on fine ebony wood gives the beads their signature depth, luster, and smooth finish — a testament to the dedication of the artisans.

Material & Care
Material & Care
- Allergenicity: Natural lacquer is non-toxic but can cause allergies. It becomes safe upon complete drying. Mild allergies can be alleviated by avoiding contact.
- Surface Aging: Over time, lacquer may shrink, potentially leading to textures, grain patterns, and the loosening or detachment of inlaid materials—a characteristic observed in centuries-old artifacts. This aging process is inherent to the craft and materials and does not impair functionality unless due to defects.
- Maintenance: Water-friendly, but keep away from chemicals and heat sources. Regular handling will enhance the shine and create a deeper bond with the item.
